New Fair Fares For All
It might be an election year, but the real talk of the town is over taxis. On May 1, 2008, Washington, DC taxi cabs switched from zone pricing to standard meters, allowing for greater transparency in how fares are derived. A boon to both locals and tourists, the new system will affect taxis city-wide, regardless of which company they represent. To help you become acquainted with the new fare rules, please take a look at the following guide:
- $3 flat pick-up rate
- 25 cents for every one-sixth of a mile after the first sixth of a mile traveled
- 25-cent charge for every minute spent stopped or traveling less than 10 mph
- The snow emergency rate will be the regular fare plus 25%
- Maximum fare for all trips within the city is $19
- Taxis found to be in non-compliance will be fined $1,000
